A Soaring Sculpture
The heart of Excelsior & Grand features a bubbling fountain and a beautiful sculpture designed by Andrea Myklebust entitled, “Allegory of Excelsior.” The word “excelsior” means “higher” or “to the sky” in Latin. Therefore, this 43-foot-tall structure features a nude, bronze figure, gilded in 22-karat gold leaf, positioned to give the illusion of soaring through the stars.
A Picturesque Setting
The neighborhood is bordered on the north end by Wolfe Park, home to Wolfe Lake and Veterans’ Memorial Amphitheater. In winter, bring your sled and slide down the hillside. Or walk through the park to the SLP Rec Center, home to two indoor skating rinks, and the ROC, a covered outdoor skating rink. In summer, kids will have fun exploring the playground, fishing at the lake, or making a splash at the 20,000 sq. ft. Aquatic Park. The entire family will enjoy the live music and open mic performances at the terraced, open-air amphitheater. Bring a blanket and a picnic dinner!
