Sonic Storytelling: Intro to Foley explores crafting sound effects for radio, film, & media by blending theory with hands-on practice.
Lightsabers, fire-breathing monsters, sandworms, flocks of birds, and squishy body parts! How are these sound effects created for radio, podcasts, and films, and how do they help tell the story? Taught by sound designer and composer Katharine Horowitz, course participants will learn about the history and art of foley: the creation or reproduction of sound effects. Through lecture and hands-on demonstrations, students will discover the evolution of sound in media, what instruments can make which sounds, and modern-day foley; all of it culminating in a live foley performance with fellow students.
All ages are encouraged to apply, and participants are encouraged to bring their own handheld instruments.
Two class times: 10 am – 12:30 pm or 1:30 – 4 pm
